Sophie Milman’s debut release reveals a gifted young jazz vocalist who swings with a surprising degree of maturity. Though born in Russia, she has called Canada home for some time and is joined by some of the country’s best jazz musicians. Milman isn’t afraid to take a few chances and seems to be quite comfortable with her own voice rather than copying others, as young performers have a tendency to do. This European CD, probably a bootleg, shows just how exciting the band was live. On 70 minutes of music recorded in a San Francisco club, Redman often indulges in close interplay and exciting tradeoffs with Metheny; the two clearly inspired each other.
The recording quality is decent, and the performances overall actually exceed Wish in passion and creativity. Highlights include “Blues for Pat,” an 181/2-minute version of “St.
Thomas” and “Carla’s Groove.” All Joshua Redman and Pat Metheny fans will want this one. by Scott Yanow, AMG Tracks: 1. Blues For Pat (Joshua Redman) 14:25 2. Sketches (Joshua Redman) 14:15 3. Band Intro (Joshua Redman) 5:30 4. Wish (Joshua Redman) 10:45 5. Thomas (Sonny Rollins) 18:26 6.

The company that owns the digital radio station “theJazz” has announced that the station is closing down at the end of March, barely more than a year since it opened. So it is hardly a propitious time to release an album with this title. Perhaps the CD should have been called theJazz Doesn’t Play Nina Simone. Nevertheless, this is a good representative selection from the work of a singing pianist who always seemed to be outside the jazz mainstream. She is not even mentioned in some jazz reference books, perhaps for the snobbish reason that some of her singles got into the pop charts and have even been used in TV commercials (but so have those of Louis Armstrong - the subject of theJazz’s previous release).
Certainly Simone was the kind of artist who appeals to people who don’t normally regard themselves as jazz fans. This album includes such popular hits as I Put a Spell on You and My Baby Just Cares For me but unaccountably omits To Love Somebody, which got into the UK Top Five in 1969. However popular she was, and despite her classical training, she was undoubtedly a jazz performer - and a unique one. Her voice was deep and she often used a very wide vibrato, putting songs across with a passion which also found voice in her political activism.
But this passion gave a forcefulness to many of her performances: whether an optimistic song like Feeling Good or the sombre Strange Fruit (here performed very histrionically). Her piano style was often thumping - even ponderous - a quality she shared with Dave Brubeck (another classically-influenced pianist). And she took material from whatever sources she pleased - popular songs, show tunes, folk and gospel songs, as well as jazz standards and her own originals. Who else would take the Ellington tune Mood Indigo as she does on this CD - as a fast swing number? She was not always the subtlest of performers, although a track like Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair shows that she could be tender and restrained. Nina left the USA in 1974 and eventually settled in the south of France, where she died in 2003.
However you categorize her, she certainly left her mark on music. Review by Tony Augarde Track List: 1. I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone 2.

All of the songs are familiar standards along the lines of “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “I’m Just a Lucky So and So,” “September Song,” “Mood Indigo” and “It Might As Well Be Spring,” and seven of the tracks are previously unreleased.
Throughout the album, the trio is relaxed and laidback, resulting in a warm, inviting collection of standards. It’s among Smith’s mellowest recordings, and it’s all the better for it. by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG - Tracks: 1. Little Girl Blue (Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart) 5:23 2.

Wes Montgomery was a late starter, not even beginning on guitar until 1942 when, at the age of nineteen, he first heard Charlie Christian on records.
Six months later he was playing professionally, and by the end of the ‘40s-presumably because, as a self-taught musician, he didn’t know such things were “impossible'-he had begun his astounding use of octaves and chords in his solos. Actually, Wes himself must take a fair share of the blame for the delay in his being “discovered.” Until late in 1959, he had done virtually all of his playing (except for two years-1948-50-with Lionel Hampton) in and around his native Indianapolis, which is scarcely the hub of the jazz world. Riverside learned of him in September of 1959, through the excited reaction of Cannonball Adderley, who had listened to Wes far into the night when a one-nighter brought Adderley to that city. Once we heard him, there was no question as to what to do.
His first LP (The Wes Montgomery Trio) was recorded just a few weeks later. Shortly thereafter he began branching out a bit. He worked in California (where previously he had been known primarily only as a brother of Buddy and Monk Montgomery, the nucleus of the noted “Mastersounds'); and when he came to New York to record this album, there was one memorable night when he was persuaded to sit in with Horace Silver’s group at the Village Gate and the audience almost literally tore the roof off the place. No doubt about it, while Wes Montgomery’s success story may have been slow in starting, it is now happening and happening fast. Although the technically unbelievable feats Wes accomplishes on guitar may be the first things to catch one’s attention, his true and substantial jazz merit lies basically in the fire and deep soul with which he performs them. Amanda (4:07). Thankfully, Impulse had the good sense to complete the entire Live at Pep’’s evening by releasing Volume 2 in 1999. Impulse has been notoriously slow to release Yusef Lateef’’s material that he recorded for them in the 1960s onto CD (shamefully, only the two Live at Pep’’s albums were domestically available in 1999). Volume Two carries on this document of a live Yusef hard bop date in much the same fashion as Volume One. Both are particularly incredible in their recording quality and the performances of each layer.
The selections and the energy that is put into each and every song is especially moving, but shines specifically bright on “P-Bouk” and “Yusef’’s Mood,” — both showcase Yusef’’s highly personal and breathy approach to the flute. If you’’ve got Volume One, Volume Two is an absolute, unquestionable must-have. Allmusic.com Tracks: 1. Brother John 2. Yusef’’s Mood 5.

Mau maju gmn beli buku2 impor berkualitas gak kesampaian, beli CD jazz gak keduitan lha wong bwt sekolah aza kebanyakan dari kita masih kesulitan. Oleh karena itu lah kami mencoba memasyarakatkan jazz dengan cara kita sendiri, kami membuat jazz lebih mudah untuk didengarkan.
Akhir kata selamat menikmati. Jazz is Free!!!

Riverside/Concord Recording date: December 28th 1959 Re-release date (Keepnews Remaster): March 4th 2008 Availabilty: CD, MP3 download, iTunes Bill Evans refused producer Orrin Keepnews' invitation to record a follow up album to his 1956 debut 'New Jazz Conceptions' for over two years, stating that he had nothing new to say. He joined the Miles Davis quintet, participating in, and took his time to plan his re-emergence as a leader in his own right.
'Everyone Digs Bill Evans' marked that return in 1958 but it was 'Portrait In Jazz', released a year later, that claimed his place at the forefront of jazz. It is the first recording made by the now legendary trio of Bill Evans (piano), Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). The disc features two versions of 'Blue In Green' developed for 'Kind Of Blue' and it is revealing to note how the trio makes its own statement of the modal masterpiece crafted spontaneously by Miles Davis and Bill Evans in the original session.
As Miles Davis noted: “Bill had this quiet fire that I loved on piano. The way he approached it, the sound he got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down some clear waterfall.” And this is true again in the versions of 'Blue In Green' here; time stands suspended, a profound, harmonic peace has settled, now the more remarkable in the paired down shape of the trio. Bill Evans' chord voicings, adapted from Debussy and the impressionist composers, leave space that Scott LaFaro expertly and expressively fills. Bill Evans' own 'Peri's Scope'and the Cole Porter standard 'What Is This Thing Called Love' are stand out tracks from this point of view. Paul Motian's drumming is nicely in balance throughout.
Overall, this is an almost perfect jazz trio album. The trio had just two years together, peaking at the in 1961. Weeks later, Scott LaFaro had been killed in a car crash, setting back Bill Evans' career and his music as much as his developing narcotic addiction.
This remastered release brings attention back to this seminal jazz album.
